SOUND Diegetic is what the actors can here, gunshots, explosions, screams, tyres screeching, dialogue? Non Diegetic is sound that’s added on afterwards usually background music. Identify examples of how sound is used to create tension, dramatic effect etc.
MISE EN SCENE is what’s in the shot, could be settings and locations, costumes, lighting, facial expressions, body language. Choose specific examples.
CINEMATOGRAPHY is what the camera is doing, Close up? Mid Shot? Long Shot? High Camera Angle? Low Camera angle? Tracking shot? Zoom? Why are they used? Choose specific examples.
EDITING is how the shots are joined together. Cut? Fade? How do they increase dramatic effect? Choose specific examples.
SPECIAL EFFECTS Robots, flying, people changing, like Hulk or The Human Torch. Choose specific examples.
MACGUFFIN A gadget or prop that the superhero uses like the batmobile or hammer.

CHARACTERS Bruno, 9 year old, innocent, likes adventure, hates leaving his friends in Berlin and moving to country. Shmuel, Jewish boy in camp, befriended by Bruno, friendship leads to tragedy. Father, SS Commandant, posted to ‘OUTWITH, ?AUSCHWITZ’ in real life?, Mother, loyal wife, but doesn’t know the full horror of the Holocaust, rows with Father when she finds out, then she wants to leave with her children. Gretl, the sister, starts off as girl who likes dolls, flirts with Lieutenant Kotler, becomes fanatical Nazi. Maria, the maid, Pavel – the Jewish servant who brings the vegetables and peels potatoes, was a doctor, bandages Bruno’s knee. Lieutenant Kotler, soldier who flirts with Gretl, gets moved out, Herr Liszt, tutor who tries to ‘brainwash’ Bruno and Gretl about Jews. Grandfather– supports son in promotion, Grandmother – cynical about Nazis.
OPENING focus on red Swastika, zooms out, Bruno running through street with friends, costume, Mise en Scene, goes past Jews being taken away in trucks at gun point, goes home, big house, servants, told daddy is promoted and they have to move.
OTHER SEQUENCES Bruno escapes from house, running through woods and streams, finds fence, meets Shmuel for first time FENCE IS SYMBOLIC OF THEIR DIFFERENT LIVES.
On swing – falls off, Pavel bandages leg, seems kind, says he practiced as a doctor, mum says thanks

ENDING, SBruno escapes from house, takes sandwich for Shmuel but loses it on the way, Shmuel has spare ‘pyjamas’ over his own, Bruno digs under fence, and puts on pyjamas, tries to find Shmuel’s dad in huts, starts to rain, thunder, gets rounded up, taken to be ‘showered’ takes off clothes, doors locked, soldier puts poison through roof, Father, finds Bruno’s clothes near fence, frantically runs through camp.
